Title: Postdoctoral Associate
Email: landon.jones@msstate.edu

Dr. Landon Jones is a postdoctoral research associate whose research centers on spatial ecology and animal movement. He relies on quantitative tools and technology to conduct his research, including agent-based simulation modeling, geographic information systems (GIS), species distribution models, and drones, focusing on predominantly avian and mammalian taxa.

Landon is currently working with Dr. Kristine Evans on creating spatial tools for conservation landscape planning and on a separate project quantifying patterns of abundance and the spatial ecology of secretive marsh birds (with Dr. Ray Iglay). Landon was recruited to Mississippi State University initially to research how to improve animal monitoring using drones (Unoccupied Aircraft Systems or UAS) with Dr. Iglay and Dr. Evans.

A native of southern California, Landon earned BS and MS degrees from Brigham Young University in Utah, where he became hooked on birding and avian research. He studied seed dispersal by two species of toucans in Costa Rica for his dissertation using field-acquired movement data and simulation approaches, earning a PhD at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. A previous postdoc brought him to Purdue University to study the spatial ecology and conservation of a recovering population of bobcats (Lynx rufus) in Indiana. Landon enjoys traveling, birding, and experiencing new cultures and landscapes.
